Description: This session covers the use of the Biped module in 3ds Max, formerly the Character Studio plug-in. Focus is on the most-used features of Biped, and the best workflow to get the desired result in the minimum time. This session is intended for those who want to understand how Biped works so it can be used in production.

Topics: Creating and posing a biped, footsteps, freeform animation, object space objects, Motion Mixer, Skin and Physique modifiers, Crowd tools.

You will learn:

  • Creating and posing a biped for two-legged, four-legged, and no-legged characters
  • All about footsteps and how to get the most from them
  • Biped under the hood: The IK/FK switch
  • Using built-in IK/FK to make custom walk cycles
  • Making a character's hands and feet stick to an object during animation
  • Reusing motions and editing them together
  • Skin and Physique with a biped
  • Crowd scenes with both biped and non-biped objects
  • The most straightforward workflow for getting the job done


Duration: 3 days (or 6 evenings)

Level: Intermediate

Prerequisite: 3ds Max Fundamentals or equivalent knowledge required (minimum
of 3 months experience with 3ds Max in a production environment).
